The most common source of excessive water pressure in a home is the municipal water supplier. Water companies set the pressure to meet their own needs, such as providing water to fire hydrants, large commercial buildings and industrial areas. City water pressure may often exceed 100 lbs. per square inch (psi), while the maximum recommended pressure for a residence is 80 psi. You can check the water pressure in your home in about 15 minutes with no previous experience.Difficulty:Moderately EasyInstructions Things You'll NeedWater pressure gauge1
Close all water faucets in the home and ensure washing machines and dishwashers are turned off. Inform others in the household not to use faucets during the pressure test.
2Attach a water pressure gauge to either an outside hose bib or washing machine spigot. Tighten the gauge coupling clockwise.
3Turn the spigot on and record the pressure level.
4Remove the pressure gauge.
Tips & WarningsWater pressure regulators should be installed in home plumbing systems to keep pressure levels in the home at a safe, consistent level regardless of incoming city water pressure fluctuations.
