How to Disconnect an Ice Maker Connection

Disconnect ice-maker connections with common household tools.Ice makers connect to water supply lines that deliver water to the refrigerator allowing it to make ice. The copper or plastic supply line connects to the water inlet fitting on the backside of the refrigerator. Located near the bottom on most models, the water inlet fitting has threads to accommodate the supply line connection. Turn off the shutoff valve supplying the ice maker with water. Ice maker shutoff valves are usually located either behind the refrigerator, under the kitchen sink or near the hot water heater.

Grasp the water inlet fitting the supply line connects to with a pair of adjustable pliers or hold it firmly with your hand.

Place an adjustable wrench on the supply line nut and adjust the wrench to the proper size.

Turn the supply line nut counterclockwise to loosen. Continue turning the nut until it is free of the threads on the inlet fitting.

Pull the supply out and away from the inlet fitting.

Tips & Warnings

Place rags or an old towel under the water inlet fitting during disconnection to soak up any water.

It is a good idea to unplug the refrigerator during disconnection for safety reasons. Water and electricity do not mix well.
