Anytime you are drilling, grinding or engraving; you may notice the edge of the piece of material you're working on is slightly raised or has small outcroppings. These burrs, as they're called, give the material a bumpy, unfinished look. Fortunately, you can easily polish and file burrs away in a process known as deburring. This can be done with a handful of tools one might expect to find in most toolboxes.Difficulty:EasyInstructions Things You'll NeedDeburring toolMetal fileWork maskTowelClothCleaning agentHeavy-duty glovesSafety goggles1

Be sure to always wear proper safety equipment, including a work mask, safety goggles and gloves before working on any piece of material. Also choose a well-lit and well-ventilated work area.

2

File down the burr using a deburring tool designed for the type of material you're using, until the surface is smooth. Most deburring tools are electric and come with a set of instructions outlining their proper usage. You can also use a metal file, if you're working with smaller pieces of metal. It's important that the material is completely smooth, before you move on to the next step.

3

Hold the item you're trying to deburr firmly between your knees, wiping away any visible shavings and debris with a towel.

4

Clear away the remaining shavings with a wire brush. Buff the surface with a cleaning agent and cloth.
