Anytime you are drilling, grinding or engraving; you may notice the edge of the piece of material you're working on is slightly raised or has small outcroppings. These burrs, as they're called, give the material a bumpy, unfinished look. Fortunately, you can easily polish and file burrs away in a process known as deburring. This can be done with a handful of tools one might expect to find in most toolboxes.Difficulty:EasyInstructions Things You'll NeedDeburring toolMetal fileWork maskTowelClothCleaning agentHeavy-duty glovesSafety goggles1
Be sure to always wear proper safety equipment, including a work mask, safety goggles and gloves before working on any piece of material. Also choose a well-lit and well-ventilated work area.
2File down the burr using a deburring tool designed for the type of material you're using, until the surface is smooth. Most deburring tools are electric and come with a set of instructions outlining their proper usage. You can also use a metal file, if you're working with smaller pieces of metal. It's important that the material is completely smooth, before you move on to the next step.
3Hold the item you're trying to deburr firmly between your knees, wiping away any visible shavings and debris with a towel.
4Clear away the remaining shavings with a wire brush. Buff the surface with a cleaning agent and cloth.
