A hammer and slotted screwdrive is all that is needed to remove knockout plug from a washing machine outlet box.Oatey washing machine outlet boxes install in the wall behind washing machines to house the supply line connections and the appliance's drain line. Since drain line installation is optional, a knockout plug blocks the drain line opening. Remove the knockout plug easily with a couple of common household tools. Once removed, place the machine's drain line in the opening and secure with a plastic tie or wire. Place the tip of a slotted screwdriver in the groove around the knockout plug.

Tap the screwdriver gently with a hammer until the screwdriver penetrates the groove.

Pry down on the screwdriver gently to lift the knockout plug from the outlet box.

Grab the knockout plug with a pair of pliers and twist until it breaks free of the outlet box.

Tips & Warnings

Use patience. The outlet box is plastic and may break if you are not gentle.

Do not let the loose knockout plug fall into the drain opening, to prevent a blockage.
